A Massachusetts man who was already charged with misleading investigators in the search for his missing wife has now been charged with murder in her disappearance, according to a top prosecutor.

Brian Walshe, 47, who is being held on $500,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the misleading charge, will be arraigned on the more severe charge on Wednesday, according to Norfolk district attorney Michael Morrissey in a video statement.

He did not elaborate on the additional evidence that led to the murder charge.

"Additional details of the investigation and the evidence that supported those charges are likely to be presented at arraignment," Morrissey said.

A person who answered the phone at Walshe's attorney, Tracy Miner's, office said Miner would not comment. Miner was contacted via email for comment. She previously stated that her client had assisted in the investigation.

Ana Walshe, 39, was last seen leaving their home in the affluent coastal community of Cohasset south of Boston in the early morning hours of 1 January, allegedly to take a ride-hailing vehicle to Logan international airport for a flight to Washington DC, according to police and prosecutors.

However, no evidence has been found that she recently drove or boarded a flight out of Logan.

Authorities said Ana Walshe was reported missing several days later by her employer in DC, where the couple has a home and where she frequently commutes during the week for work at a real estate firm.

Her cellphone had not been used, and neither her credit nor debit cards had been used.

Authorities searched the family's home as well as a nearby wooded area. The couple has three children.

Prosecutors testified in court that Brian Walshe was seen on surveillance video buying $450 in cleaning supplies the day after his wife was last seen. According to prosecutors, police also discovered a broken knife and blood in the basement of the couple's home, though they did not specify whose blood it was.

Last week, investigators also searched a trash disposal facility and a condo complex north of Boston where Brian Walshe's mother lives. They discovered items that may be related to the investigation.

According to federal court records, Brian Walshe was in home confinement while awaiting sentencing in a fraud case involving the sale of fake Andy Warhol paintings. Ana Walshe's disappearance and her husband's case appear to be unrelated, according to Cohasset police.
